A. Unfortunate Timing

[ For those who know Dorian, or had seen him during the celebrations for the Visitors last month, they might realize that he hasn't really been around since before Aella's body had been found. So seeing a post from him shortly after her funeral might be a bit of a surprise. ]

...As much as it's a relief to know that my homeworld is still fine, I am getting a bit tired of being dragged back and forth between there and this world. It would be nice to have a warning or something, at least.

Anyway, I'm back. I apologize if I worried anyone. But I have the feeling that I... perhaps missed something? I can't explain it, but something feels... different somehow. The winds feel unsettled.

[ Perhaps it's due to his own association with air, or being a member of Sylph himelf, but he certain does sense that something is amiss.]

So what's been going on?

B. The Gift That Keeps on Giving

[ Dorian isn't entirely sure how to feel about the events that occurred while he'd been gone. He had no strong attachment to gods, not here or even back home, but hearing of the death of one of them was rather disturbing. Not many are strong enough to kill gods, after all. And he especially isn't sure how to feel about this new god, Nymion.

Already skeptical of the gods as he is, he isn't entirely sure that he trusts Nymion. But his offer to test some of the Sylph-related abilities was too tempting to pass up. Dorian had been putting off trying a lot of the offered abilities, mostly since he had a few spells that had rather similar effects. But then he learned of a new ability that allowed them to take on a storm form, which was something that - for all his wind- and storm-related powers - Dorian actually didn't have himself.

And though he still didn't trust Nymion, he accepted the offer for now. Anyone who happened to catch sight of Dorian practicing; the way his already-glowing eyes would flash with sparks of lightning, before his normal form seems to fade, the billowing winds and clouds that make him up now leaving just the barest outline of his body. It gives him an almost etheral appearance, if not for the streaks of lightning that crackle all throughout. ]

C. I Scream, You Scream

[ There seems to be a bit of a mood whiplash with the cafe's opening, though Dorian can understand needing something a bit lighter after the given events. Maybe it's just because he hadn't been there to experience what happened, so he wasn't as much in need of the mood booster as others would be.

Still, he wanted to support the new business, and he was curious about this new dessert. And honestly, with the music playing and the rather tasty treats, the atmosphere was certainly nice. Plus the sea cream was actually really good. Turning to the nearest person, he can't help asking almost a bit excitedly. ]

Personality:

At first glance, Dorian Storm is as charming and charismatic as one would expect of a bard such as him. Having grown up in a wealthy and prominent family, he is well-spoken and his appearance would almost be described as pristine. And as someone whose profession is being onstage and engaging a crowd, he has been known to use his charm to talk his way out of situations or gather information. On the surface, Dorian can come across as a pretty competent individual.

But while this is true to a degree, Dorian is quite good at putting on performances. Despite his upbringing and trade, he actually does get anxious when he becomes the center focus. And contrary to what he might like people to believe, he doesn’t always know the right thing to say, and can also get easily flustered if things are going wrong. Because as much he can seem outwardly confident, the truth is he actually quite insecure about himself and his abilities.

Born the second son of the Wyvernwind family, Dorian (or Brontë, as his family knew him) often felt overshadowed by his older brother, Cyrus, who was the “...ever stalwart first son, slave to his duty”, and perfectly suited as heir to the power and position of their family’s name. Dorian, on the other hand, struggled with being the Secondsun, and left him second-guessing his abilities and his worth in this family. His choice to depart from the Silken Squall, leaving “Brontë” behind, had partially been born from feeling ineffectual in his family, and that things would be handeld fine without him.

Even after spending time away from home, and meeting friends and discovering things about himself, that insecurity hasn’t entirely gone away. Dorian often still feels the need to prove himself, to show his worth, but can easily get down on himself when things go wrong. At times he feels lost, and especially after Cyrus’ death and reuniting with Bells Hells he is uncertain of his place in everything. By his own words, he had always felt on the outside looking in, and that his feelings were unimportant. He is used to putting away how he feels for the greater good.

But he also knows that his strength is in his smile, because at the end of the day, Dorian has a good heart. One of the things that he enjoys most is seeing people of all kinds, with all sorts of differences, come to work and live together. And despite the things he keeps to himself, the one thing he doesn’t keep secret is how deeply he cares for his friends. Despite still learning and questioning his own abilities, he doesn’t hesitate to rush into danger to protect them, and is always prepared to fight alongside or heal them. Those that know him find him likable, charming, and admirable, see his true potential. And perhaps, with a bit of time and trust in others and himself, Dorian can someday see it as well.

Powers and abilities: Dorian's abilities come from being an Air Genasi and a Bard, and since it is rather extensive they are listed here
Chosen faction: Sylph
Suitability: The world of Exandria, which is based on a D&D game, is very high fantasy and low-tech, so I believe Dorian would fit well in Caldera, since it is similar to what he's already familiar with.

Questions, comments, and concerns: I was just wondering if Dorian would be able to still have his flute with him. I know he couldn't have his mandolin, since that is enchanted, but his flute is just a regular instrument and he would have had it on his person before arriving in Caldera. Also, he wears a Sending Stone around his neck, so would he still have that and it would just be unenchanted, or would he not have it at all?

Current Condition: A little tired after trying to figure out how to land a floating bar, but mostly well

Abilities: As an Air Genasi, Dorian has the abilities of unending breath (which allows him to hold his breath indefinitely while conscious) and can cast levitation once a day. As a bard, he is able to cast cantrips such as blade ward, mending, minor illusion and thunderclap, as well as spells such as charm person, dissonant whispers, cure wounds, invisibility, and shatter (and likely other spells as well, but these are currently his known spells). He is also able to inspire others through music, can play musical instruments, and has skills in sword-fighting and general combat

Inventory: At the time he is picked up, Dorian will have his blue lute, his axe (the handle of the axe is also his flute), his winged boots (which allow him to fly for a limited amount of time), his moon-touched scimitar, the Canaith Mandolin, an immovable rod, a bag of holding with gold, a Bertrand Bell doll, and a sending stone, as well as the clothes he is wearing

Personality:

❧ What is your character’s biggest fear? How do they handle it?
Dorian’s biggest fear is simply not being good enough. Dorian grew up in the Silken Squall with many expectations placed on him, despite being the second in line to inherit the Wyvernwind’s position of guiding the Squall, and in many ways he feels that he wasn’t able to meet those expectations. He often felt overshadowed by his older brother, Cyrus, and had left home to try and prove his worth, even if only to prove it to himself. Even while traveling and meeting with the people who would become his friends, though, he often feels that he is not quite good enough with them. He still works as hard as he can and tries his best – and even at times can be called a bit of a try-hard – but he often still doubts himself and his abilities, despite even what his friends say about him.

❧ If your character had to choose between saving a loved one and saving an entire city of innocents, who do they pick?
Dorian has proven before that he would absolutely choose to save a loved one over saving others. When bargaining with the Spider Queen to regain memories that he had lost, and she had asked for a champion, he had been willing to give the Circlet to Poska despite knowing what both of them were capable of, and knowing the circlet in Poska’s possession would make her even more dangerous, in return for the Spider Queen sparing his friends. Even the Spider Queen expresses her surprise when she realizes that he means it, and ultimately it does change his alignment from Chaotic Good to Chaotic Neutral.

❧ What three adjectives would you use to describe your character and why those three?
Anxious - Despite how charming and charismatic he can be, Dorian is also often a bit nervous and unsure of himself at times. This can partially be attributed to his secluded upbringing, but he does seem to have trouble interacting with others at times, and can often get too caught up in his doubts that he hesitates and has trouble acting until it’s too late.

Open - While Dorian can often act guarded and has trouble trusting others, he is actually has quite an open and welcoming mind. Even growing up closed off from the rest of the world, Dorian was still curious about what life on the surface was like. He’d hinted that his parents wouldn’t approve of romantic relationships with non-Genasi, but that is not the kind of person he is. He enjoys seeing different kinds of people living and working together, and wants to explore and see more of what the world has to offer.

Elegant - Dorian is often described as fancy by friends and strangers alike. Coming from a family of money (something that people always seem to notice about him upon just a glance), he enjoys fashion and fine clothes, and keeps his appearance as clean and neat as possible. He is also educated, so is eloquent and well-spoken, adding to his sense of class and sophistication.

❧ What would you consider their biggest flaw/weakness?
Dorian’s biggest weakness is that how he often still struggles with trusting others. While he’s come a long way, he is still a rather secretive person, and doesn’t open up easily to others. He had a lot of difficulty with trusting people outside of his circle of friends, despite the expertise with other matters that some of those people could provide to help his friends. But even with his friends he has a tendency to keep secrets, and even at times lie to them. At times it’s because he doesn’t want them to worry, but eventually even he realized that he really had no reason to be lying to them as he was. He is working to be more honest with the people he already trusts, and to be able to at least try to be open to others who could potentially help him and his friends.

❧ What is the most difficult choice your character has had to make? How did they handle it?
The most difficult choice Dorian has had to make was choosing betweenstaying in Jrusar to help his group of friends, and leaving the cityto help look out for his older brother, Cyrus. He had initially cometo Jrusar to help his friend, Orym, and had since made new friendsand gotten close to the group that would become Bells Hells. But whenhis brother turned out to be wanted and had to go on the run, he madethe decision to leave with Cyrus in order to help keep his brothersafe. As much as he wanted to stay with the friends he had gotten toknow, he was willing to sacrifice his wants in order to see that hisbrother was safe.

OU/OC/AU/CRAU: Dorian is going to be slightly AU'd. His backstory follows canon up until he arrives in Marquet and ends up having his purse strings cut while staying at a hostel one night. With his money stolen, he comes across the circus who offer him a job, and with no money to his (new) name he accepts and joins, not entirely realizing it travels between worlds until much later. Still, he figures he can always return to Exandria when his contract is up. He's still fairly new to the circus, having joined pretty recently.

Job: He has an act where he performs music, either on his lute or flute. He also helps write music for some of the other acts in the circus.
